ARANCELES PARA AUTOS CHINOS

TARIFFS ON CHINESE-ORIGIN AUTOMOBILES

En fechas recientes la Presidenta de México envió un proyecto de decreto a la cámara de diputados mediante el cual se pretende imponer aranceles, entre otros a los automóviles de origen chino, el objeto de esta medida es proteger la industria nacional y fomentar la ampliación de la planta productiva en México, sin embargo, este tipo de medidas como lo hemos visto en el caso de los aranceles impuestos por el presidente de los Estados Unidos, generan un efecto adverso en los consumidores nacionales, incluso podrían generar un impacto negativo en la generalidad de la industria automotriz en México.

In recent days, the President of Mexico submitted a draft decree to the Chamber of Deputies seeking to impose tariffs—among other items—on motor vehicles of Chinese origin. The stated purpose of this measure is to protect domestic industry and promote the expansion of Mexico’s productive capacity. However, as seen with the tariffs imposed by the President of the United States, measures of this kind tend to produce adverse effects on domestic consumers and could even have a negative impact on Mexico’s automotive industry as a whole.

Así, el gobierno de México anunció el Paquete Económico para el año 2026. Tal y como se aprecia de este, se impondrá un arancel de hasta el 50% a los autos provenientes de Asia, lo cual representa un desafío tanto para los modelos importados de Japón, como para los autos de origen chino, que hoy ya representan casi un 20% de las ventas de autos nuevos en nuestro país.

Accordingly, the Government of Mexico announced the Economic Package for Fiscal Year 2026. As reflected therein, a tariff of up to 50% will be imposed on automobiles originating in Asia, which presents a challenge both for models imported from Japan and for Chinese-origin vehicles, which already account for nearly 20% of new-car sales in Mexico.

En efecto, la medida podría impactar de manera directa a muchas marcas de autos en nuestro país. Más allá de los fabricantes que importan autos desde China, como General Motors, MG, BYD, Geely, Ford o Dodge, los aranceles también podrían impactar a Volkswagen que importa Virtus y Taigun desde India, de donde también llegan modelos de Hyundai y Suzuki. Las importaciones de Japón y Corea sacudirán a Mazda, a Kia, a Nissan, a Mitsubishi y a Toyota.

Indeed, the measure could directly affect many automotive brands in Mexico. Beyond manufacturers that import vehicles from China—such as General Motors, MG, BYD, Geely, Ford, and Dodge—the tariffs could also impact Volkswagen, which imports the Virtus and Taigun from India, from which Hyundai and Suzuki also source certain models. Imports from Japan and South Korea would likewise affect Mazda, Kia, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Toyota.

Cabe mencionar que los aranceles no solo impactaran al sector automotriz, en el documento enviado al congreso de la unión para su aprobación figuran muchos otros productos importados como son textiles, vestido, plástico, siderúrgicos, electrodomésticos, aluminio, juguetes, muebles, calzado, papel y cartón, motocicletas, remolques, vidrio, entre otras.

It should be noted that the tariffs will not only affect the automotive sector. The document submitted to the Congress of the Union for approval lists many other imported products, including textiles, apparel, plastics, steel products, household appliances, aluminum, toys, furniture, footwear, paper and cardboard, motorcycles, trailers, and glass, among others.

No menos importante quiero recordar que estos aranceles, están planeados para ser temporales hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2026.

No less importantly, these tariffs are intended to be temporary, through December 31, 2026.
